Proverbs 12:10 emphasizes that a person's character is revealed in how they treat animals, with righteous individuals showing compassion and care, while even the "kindest" acts of the wicked towards animals are ultimately cruel and lacking in genuine empathy.
What is it about dogs, specifically? Besides the fact that if you die in your house alone, your dog will starve to death snuggled next to you but your cat, would eat you?
MRI scans show that dog brains respond to affection from their owners just as strongly as they do to food (and for some dogs, praise is an even more effective incentive than food). Dogs recognize people and can learn to interpret human emotional states. Facial expressions are just one component. Scientific studies also indicate that dogs can understand human intentions, assist their owners intuitively without command and even avoid people who don’t cooperate with their owners or treat them well and can even read intentions.
In a nut shell, a human’s bond with such unconditional love can surpass many human relationships. This explains what neuroscience now confirms. The ginormous gravity that can come with the loss of a dog rivals that of important human loss often surpassing the loss felt with other humans.
True unconditional love is taught but too often a rare gift to know and receive intimately. As much as we’ve heard the words from the pulpit followed by actions that do not align, I feel like growing up we had something right. Still til this day if I hear “that’s my dog (dawg)” my heart smiles knowing we knew then in our core with daily confirmation and in regular practice what no one sitting high has ever been able to convince me that we need convicting.
That reason alone is enough for me (but, since I’m a believer in full transparency I must admit I wear red and black better than most other team colors) to say faithfully #godawgs and I love my bitches.
